2 How does a podcast work?
The most popular program to receive and subscribe to podcasts is Apple's iTunes software. This software is free to download and use. You do not have to have an Apple computer to use iTunes. Please visit the Apple website to obtain iTunes if you do not have it by clicking here.
Once there, click "Download iTunes". Continue with the installation of the software once you have completed downloading it.
3 How can I subscribe to a podcast?
There are a couple of ways. You can open iTunes, then under "Store" in the top menu, click "Search". The iTunes software will then open their store, where you can search for the name of the podcast broadcaster (from here on known as podcaster). Even though the podcast you may be looking for is free, could still be listed in the iTunes store. The second way to subscribe is to directly visit the podcaster's link for their podcast feed. You may subscribe to the Gene Edwards' Podcast by visiting in a web browser:
Once there, select iTunes in the top drop down selection box. Then press "Subscribe Now". This will open up the iTunes software on your computer(assuming it is installed already). Depending on your web browser, you may only see a link that says, "Subscribe" instead of a drop-down box.
4 Once subscribed, how do I listen to my podcasts?
Open iTunes on your computer, and on the left hand side you will see various categories to choose from. Click on "Podcasts". Then click the triangle to the left of the podcast title, and you will see all available episodes. If a title is greyed out, that indicates it is not yet downloaded to your computer. To do so, simply click "GET". If the titles are not greyed out, double click one to begin playing. If you own an iPod or iPhone, connecting those to your computer will cause iTunes to copy your podcast episodes to your device so you can take it with you wherever you go!
5 How do I receive new episodes of the podcast?
When the podcaster releases new episodes, and you are subscribed to that podcast, they will automatically be downloaded into iTunes. This will only work if iTunes has been opened on the computer, and it is connected to the Internet. You may also open iTunes, and right-click on the podcast title, and select "Update Podcast". This will cause iTunes to manually check for new episodes.
